Seed Cycling

Seed Cycling Simplified

Seed Cycling has been around for decades already, and is recommended by nutritionists, herbalists, naturopaths, and acupuncturists around the world because of the benefits it can have for your body.

But what is it?

Simply put: seed cycling is the concept of eating specific seeds during the 2 phases of your menstrual cycle.

Let us explain.

Typically, a person’s menstrual cycle is divided into two phases. Phase 1 runs from day 1 to 14, and phase 2 runs from day 15 to 28.

During each phase, your body needs specific nutrients to help everything run smoothly. And by smoothly, we mean a symptom-free menstrual cycle that’ll keep you feeling your best. The good news is you can get all of these necessary nutrients by eating 4 specific seeds: flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and sunflower seeds.

So what’s so great about these seeds?

During phase 1, flax and pumpkin seeds are your superseeds because they contain so many healthy fats, lignans, fibre, antioxidants, magnesium, and zinc (that’s a lot of goodness packed into those tiny seeds, right?!).

By eating these seeds during phase 1, you can help your body fight breast pain, PCOS symptoms, menstrual migraines, PMS symptoms and severe PMS mood swings, which is pretty great if you ask us.

During phase 2, sesame and sunflower seeds are your go-to nutrient boosters because they contain plenty of lignans, vitamins B1, B6, and E, calcium, selenium, and flavonoids.

These are important for regulating your menstrual cycle, relieving PMS symptoms, and reducing both premenstrual water retention and period cramps.

As you can see, these tiny seeds are pretty powerful, and the effects can be overwhelmingly positive for your body (and we mean in general, too, not even just where your period is concerned!).

Rooby bars contain all the necessary seeds plus extra awesome superfoods to ensure you fill your body with as much of the good stuff as it needs throughout each phase.

The Nitty Gritty Details About Seed Cycling & How Your Body Works

Okay, please bare with us as we delve into the details.

We’ve mentioned the 2 phases of your cycle. But what are they exactly? Well, we need to get a little more *sciency* because these phases have their own names and meanings, but we’ll try and keep it as simple as possible.

Phase 1 is also known as the follicular phase, and it begins on day one of your period.

During the follicular phase, your hormones change. Estrogen, FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), and LH (luteinising hormone) gradually increase. It’s your body’s way of getting ready for ovulation, which typically happens at the end of phase 1, on day 14 of your cycle.

Phase 2 is known as the luteal phase, which begins on day 15 of your cycle, and ends the day before your next period.

When your body transitions into the luteal phase, it starts to get ready for your period. Estrogen levels begin to drop, and progesterone levels begin to rise, thickening the lining of your uterus (just in case a fertilised egg needs to plant itself in there!). By the end of the second phase, the progesterone falls back to its base level again.

Check out this graph for a clearer picture of what we mean.

Guess what, though: this is based on a “regular 28-day cycle”, and not a lot of women have one of those…

In fact, around 80% of women suffer from hormonal imbalance, which means if you’re looking at our graph and thinking, “wow, I wish I had a cycle like that”, you’re not alone.

Hormonal imbalance is caused by anything from stress, pollution, an unhealthy diet, lack of daily movement, and even lack of sleep. And when hormonal imbalance hits, it can cause some pretty adverse effects – both mentally and physically.

Do you suffer from PMS, an irregular cycle, headaches, mood swings, breakouts, and painful cramps every month? How about irregular periods, severe acne, PCOS, thyroid disorders, and even chronic fatigue?

Your hormones may be to blame.

Why Seed Cycling Could Be The Answer

Many women tend to believe that their unruly monthly symptoms are pretty normal, choosing to ‘just get on with it, which can be relatively easy if you’re not suffering too badly.

However, at their worst, these symptoms can be distressing, causing days off work, missed appointments or dates, or spending most of your weekend curled up on the sofa, and a lot of women end up turning to over-the-counter medication or seeking professional help because they’re in so much pain.

We would always suggest that you visit your GP if you’re suffering from severe symptoms that get in the way of your day-to-day life. But, we would also suggest looking into seed cycling as a natural remedy to overhaul your period health.

The concept is simple: eating a specific amount of certain seeds in each phase of your cycle can naturally help balance your hormones (putting it into practice can be a bit harder, but we’ll get into that in a moment).

Because seed cycling is such a natural, gentle process, it can take a while for the effects to kick in. Most women see results around the 3-month mark, which means it’s super important that you consistently add these seeds to your diet.

Does this mean I’m messing with my hormones? It sounds intimidating.

Seed cycling isn’t a form of medication; it’s simply a natural way of balancing your hormones and bringing harmony to your body. So no weird side effects. Just plenty of extra nutrients to give your entire body the boost it craves.

And does seed cycling really work? Is there any evidence?

While there’s no proven scientific evidence to show that seed cycling works, that’s mostly because there are no nutritional experiments currently taking place. Unfortunately, most pharmaceutical companies and educational institutes aren’t particularly interested in natural concepts like this.

However, there is a lot of research that shows how beneficial pumpkin, flax, sesame and sunflower seeds are for women’s health – and they’re the exact seeds used in seed cycling.

Take a look at our seeds below. If you click on them, you can see all their nutritional info along with scientific references that prove just how beneficial including these seeds in your diet can be!

So How Do I Seed Cycle?

Rooby Bars Make It Simple

So we’ve covered the basics (and the more detailed side) of your hormones and seed cycling. Now it’s time to put it all together.

As you now know, there are 2 phases in your menstrual cycle:

  • Phase 1 – the follicular phase, where you should consume a specific amount of raw flax and pumpkin seeds daily
  • Phase 2 – the luteal phase, where you should concentrate on eating a specific amount of sesame and sunflower seeds daily

Super simple concept, right?

But how do you get started?

Implementing seed cycling directly into your diet can be time-consuming. Sure, you could buy a few bags of each seed, weigh out the precise amount you need daily, and eat them like that. But that’s hardly a good way to keep anybody interested enough to get into a solid routine…

That’s not all, though, because you need to eat the seeds raw and completely uncooked or unprocessed – otherwise, you risk damaging the seed, and you’d miss out on all their important nutrients.

On top of that (yeah, we’re not quite finished yet), what’s the point in eating all those seeds if they’re the only things you add to your routine? What about all the other superfoods you could be adding to overhaul your health?

That’s where we come in.

Rooby bars not only give you the precise measurements of each seed you need, but they’re packed full of superfoods like baobab, chokeberry, turmeric and maca powders, and even dried fruits like cranberries, to really give you a head-start on your health journey. And they’re not overly stuffed with dates either (which are great too, but too many dates can cause problems of their own!).

This is what makes Rooby bars so unique. We’re different from other raw bars on the market. By including Rooby bars in your daily diet, you get double the benefits

And there’s no excess rubbish in any one of our bars. We promise.

We’re proud to sell one of the healthiest snacks on the market. Ours is a snack that’ll help you replace unhealthier options with one that’s full of organic, natural ingredients and none of the E-preservatives, added sugars or extra calories.

How do I seed cycle with Rooby bars?

It may sound too good to be true, but all you need to do is eat one Rooby bar per day to get your daily requirement of seeds and superfoods.

Yes, really.

We offer 4 delicious flavours: 2 for each phase of your cycle. Simply pick your favourites or indulge in every flavour as you make your way through your cycle!

Frequently Asked Questions

Rooby Bars make it simple.

Rooby bars are a safe and healthy snack alternative packed full of nutritional benefits.

Seed cycling is considered to be a natural, healthy, and gentle approach to incorporating seeds into your daily diet and is no different to adding seeds to your food.

Rooby Bars are simply very healthy, organic snacks and not medicine or food supplements. You should always consult your doctor if you are facing severe health problems.

Whilst it’s always great to be precise, we know that every woman’s cycle is a little bit different. You can certainly still eat Rooby bars if you don’t have a regular 28-day cycle!

We have two simple methods to follow if your cycle is irregular.

  1. Begin eating Rooby bars on day one of your period and complete a 28-day cycle where you eat one bar per day. It’s most important to complete both phases, whether you know exactly when ovulation occurs or not, so eat your phase one bars between days 1 and 14, then change to phase two bars from day 15 to 28.
  2. Follow the Moon Cycle (which we’ll go into more detail about in the next question).

Even if you find yourself without a period, you can follow the Moon Cycle and still reap the benefits of your Rooby bars (you may even find it helps get you back on track)!

To follow the Moon Cycle, you’ll need to do a little bit of detective work and find out when the next New Moon is (think about using your favourite search engine, an app, or just staring into the sky on a beautiful evening to find out when this will be).

Then:

  • Begin with your phase 1 bars on the day of the New Moon.
  • Continue with phase 1 up to and including day 14.
  • On day 15 (where you’ll be able to spot the full moon!), begin with your phase 2 bars and continue up to and including day 28.

A fascinating fact about following the Moon Cycle is that many women’s menstrual cycles tend to synchronise with it without them even realising! In fact, the moon is seen as a feminine symbol.

As with many things, there is no perfect time scale, and it’s different for every woman.

Some women record benefits from the first week, whereas others will tell you it took them between 3 and 6 months to really feel the difference in their bodies. Our journeys are all individual, and you shouldn’t be worried if you don’t feel any differences from day 1. You should stick to a routine, though, as you’re much more likely to see results when you’re consistent.

If you’re suffering from severe symptoms of PCOS, endometriosis, or a complete loss of periods, your time frame maybe a little longer. What’s important is that you’re patient with your body and remind yourself often that you’re embarking on a new, gentle journey to overhaul your period health.

We’d suggest that you consult your doctor before making any changes to your diet under these circumstances.

Seed cycling is a gentle, healthy process based on boosting nutrition. That means that for severe menstrual problems, not only can it work, but be incredibly beneficial. However, we always suggest you consult your GP if you are facing severe health problems and you are planning to change your diet.

Seed cycling could benefit you if you’re on the pill or other forms of birth control because they’ll give you a great boost of nutrients to help you look after your body.

Rooby bars can also be helpful for anyone transitioning off birth control and getting their cycle back on track because those extra nutrients can help get your hormones back into a rhythm.

Yes! In fact, many women have reported that seed cycling has been beneficial to them in this often challenging period in their lives and helped soothe a lot of nasty symptoms. This is all thanks to their healthy dose of ingredients and superfoods that are full of nutrients like zinc, lignans, vitamins, and so much more.
